Effect of a Strong Axial Magnetic Field in the Plasma Recombination and Extreme Ultraviolet Emission from a Highly-Ionized Capillary Discharge

چکیده
The effect of an externally-applied 70-100 kG axial magnetic field in the temporal evolution of the extreme ultraviolet emission from a 500 pm diameter highly-ionized LiH capillary discharge has been studied. In the absence of external magnetic confinement, strong emission from ionic transitions excited by collisional recombination is observed at the end of the current pulse. The externally-applied magnetic field is observed to reduce the intensity of the recombination lines by decreasing the rate of plasma cooling by electron heat conduction to the capillary walls. In contrast, the self-generated magnetic field of the discharge aids to the generation of an initially hot plasma, and allows rapid conduction cooling at the end of the current pulse. The results are discussed in relation to a proposed capillary-dischargeexcited extreme ultraviolet recombination laser scheme.

We investigated the role of a guiding magnetic field on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and ion emission from a laser produced Sn plasma for various laser pulse duration and intensity. For producing plasmas, planar slabs of pure Sn were irradiated with 1064 nm, Nd:YAG laser pulses with varying pulse duration (5–15 ns) and intensity. A magnetic trap was fabricated with the use of two neodymium permane...
متن کاملSpectroscopically pure metal vapor source for highly charged ion spectroscopy and capillary discharge soft x-ray lasers.
We describe a compact, pulsed metal vapor source used for the production of dense plasma columns of interest for both soft x-ray laser research and spectroscopy of highly ionized plasmas. The source generates spectroscopically pure cadmium vapor jets in a room-temperature environment by rapidly heating an electrode with a capacitive discharge. In the configuration described herein, the metal va...

We present a study of the highly nonlinear optical excitation of noble gases in tapered hollow waveguides using few-femtosecond laser pulses. The local plasmonic field enhancement induces the generation of a nanometric plasma, resulting in incoherent extreme-ultraviolet fluorescence from optical transitions of neutral and ionized xenon, argon, and neon. Despite sufficient intensity in the waveg...
متن کاملIntense plasma discharge source at 13.5 nm for extreme-ultraviolet lithography.
We measured an emission of 6 mJ/pulse at 13.5 nm produced by the Li(2+) Lyman-? transition excited by a fast capillary discharge, using a lithium hydride capillary. 75% of the energy emanated from a spot size of 0.6 mm. The emission is narrow band and would thus be useful in extreme-ultraviolet lithography imaging systems that use Mo:Si multilayer mirrors. The output within the bandwidth of Mo:...
